Havers Dog Behaviour Blog

My dog behaviour blog is all about dogs and owners I have helped and dog related items in the news.

The difference is clear

I work with a lot of dogs and I get to see all types of behaviour and I work with dogs that will and do bite.

I work with a lot of dogs who are very frustrated with people and this can teach the dog to not trust people, which is why a lot of people who work with dogs try to placate by using food.

If you have worked with me you will know I only use food if that is the only thing that makes any sense to a dog, that is rare indeed as the owner and the attention usually make more sense.

However when a dog is highly stressed or confused, they will communicate that with their behaviour.

I would like you to watch this video clip please:

In this video you will see and hear how the dog reacts to being groomed.

In this video, it is the same dog being groomed by a different groomer and I would like you to observe the difference in the dogs behaviour.

Many , many people claim to be able to do things and to a degree, they will be right and they can do a job.

What sets those apart from the rest is the ability to deal with extreme behaviours.

Over the last 26 years I have been working with dogs, many people have asked if they can work with me, can I mentor them and I have always said yes yet why do I still work alone?

With the small and easy dogs, everyone is confident, even with the small, aggressive dogs people have been confident yet when I have asked people to stand in front of a dog that will bite them and to show no fear and not to look at it whilst you talk to the owners, no one has passed the test. Why?

Because fear is the hardest thing to overcome and to manage. Feeling that we are not in control is a scary place to be and with a dog that will bite you, and I have been bitten many times, that can be a difficult place.

I haven’t been bitten for quite a while because I learn, I learn when to give a dog space and I learn how to communicate to a dog I am relaxed.

If you are stressed and confused, the dog will know you are not in control of yourself and he will not trust you.

The dog in these two videos had real trust issues with groomers, why we do not know but something happened that made him distrust being on the grooming table. You can hear his noise in the first video.

In the second video with a different groomer, you can see and hear how much more relaxed he is and how much quieter he is, even when being lifted on and off the table.

You will ever know how much someone knows until they are asked to prove how much they know by working with difficult dogs.

I have worked with this dog, I have done several home visits and have helped his family make remarkable differences to his behaviour, they can now watch TV in peace and can remove him from situations without being bitten.

Your dog has to trust you before he can trust anyone else so only use people you can trust to work with your dog because you will then get the results you want.

The groomer in the second video where the dog is relaxed and calm is where my clients took the dog on my recommendation. I meet a lot of people doing what I do, and I quickly know who are genuine, confident dog people who are not fazed by confused dogs.
